Alfred Adler Institute of San Francisco

Review of
Mark Stone, Psy.D.

Alfred Adler's most important book, The Neurotic Character, has just been reborn. A dedicated translator and team of editors, working slowly and carefully with Dr. Stein, have helped create this accurate and clear translation of Adler's greatest work. After eleven years and thousands of hours of research, collecting manuscripts, coordinating translators, and editing, Dr. Stein is publishing Adler's profound magnum opus, the first volume of The Collected Clinical Works of Alfred Adler.

All New Features

This completely new translation of the 1927 fourth edition features:

Necessary Reading

The Neurotic Character is necessary reading for all clinicians, professors, and students of psychology who want to capture the depth and complexity of Adlerian theory and practice beyond his highly simplified, popular writings like What Life Could Mean to You and Understanding Human Nature.

Support The Collected Works

Every purchase of The Neurotic Character will accelerate the publication of the next nine volumes of the clinical works, consisting of Adler's journal articles. They have all been translated and are in the final stages of editing. You can further support this project by encouraging university libraries to add a copy of The Neurotic Character to their stacks and Adlerian institutes to adopt the volume as required reading.

Stein-photo About the Director of the Classical Adlerian Translation Project and Editor of The Collected Clinical Works of Alfred Adler:
Henry T. Stein, Ph.D., is the leading advocate of Classical Adlerian psychology in the United States. Trained by Sophia de Vries and Anthony Bruck, both of whom studied with Alfred Adler, he has been training psychotherapists for over twenty years with an approach based on the original teachings and therapeutic style of Alfred Adler, as well as the clinical and philosophical writings of other Classical Adlerians--Kurt Adler, Lydia Sicher, Alexander Mueller, Erwin Wexberg, and Alexander Neuer. He is the director of the Classical Adlerian Translation Project, a translating-editing team dedicated to publishing the writings of Classical Adlerians. Since 1996, he has maintained a richly informative web site on the Internet at http://go.ourworld.nu/hstein, providing articles, graphics, transcriptions, video clips, photographs, and discussion forums. As the senior training analyst at the Alfred Adler Institute of San Francisco, he offers mentor-oriented distance training in Classical Adlerian psychotherapy, as well as case consultation. His own contributions to Adlerian clinical practice include a comprehensive adaptation of the Socratic method, a thorough exposition of the twelve stages of psychotherapy, and a therapeutic integration of Abraham Maslow's vision of optimal human development.
